National Register Properties in South Carolina Spanish Mount Point, Charleston County (Address Restricted) |
Site Overview | Excavation |
(The Mound) Spanish Mount is significant for its ability to yield information about South Carolina’s pre-history. Spanish Mount is a formative site dating between 2200 and 1800 BC. It represents a transitional period of pre-history and the midden accumulated during the site’s short term occupation. The site is associated with early coastal ceramics of the sand-tempered Awendaw-Horse types and simular middens are found along the coast of Georgia and South Carolina. Spanish Mount is an oyster-clam shell midden, about 27 meters long and 3 meters high. The site is moderately forested with hardwoods and has a cover of low bush. It is bordered by water and marsh on three sides. Listed in the National Register August 30, 1974.
